Throughout the MFRE program, students undertake a professional development course where they gain valuable experience and skills through workshops and seminars led by industry professionals.

It’s summer and MFRE students are on their way with their graduating projects. In other words, they are officially immersed in the professional world, working in industry and academic projects. To prepare for this challenge they attended professional development workshops and seminars to equip themselves with communication skills, research methods, product development tools and data analysis techniques. These workshops and seminars were imparted during May by UBC professors, guest speakers, industry associates and MFRE alumni.

One particular example of these seminars was called “Food security vs. global population growth”. Dr. Dominika Średnicka, a guest speaker from the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, taught the MFRE students about this current and important global issue. Throughout the seminar, students learned global population projections, identified the most vulnerable segments, understood what rising global temperatures mean for food security, and learned possible ways to address this issue both at industry level and at home.

Other workshops and seminars in which the students participated were Proposal development, Business research, Literature review and research tracking, Business report writing, Project management, New product development, and an Alteryx and Tableau workshop for data visualization.
