Masters of Food and Resource Economics MFRE Leadership Award

The MFRE Leadership Award seeks to honor the student or students who have been positive leaders through their studies in the MFRE program. The recipient of this award has motivated hers/his classmates, expanded other students’ horizons, showed dedication and hard work, and had a positive outlook. Particular emphasis is given to a student who develops or strengthens their leadership qualities during the MFRE program; put another way, to a student who blossoms or flourishes within the MFRE program in a way that has a positive influence on their fellow students and the program. Recipients can use the award to support professional development activities of their choosing up to a maximum of $1,000.

Harmony Bjarnason

Harmony used the award to attend the Climate Leaders Training offered in July 2015 in Toronto by The Climate Reality Project, which is chaired and founded by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore.

Sean Holowaychuk

Congratulations to Sean Holowaychuk for receiving the 2015 MFRE Leadership Award. Sean currently teaches the FRE course “Project Monitoring & Evaluation in International Development.”, where his interests are in the forces that characterize and shape progress in developing economies.

Joel Bokenfohr

Joel used the award to attend the course Agribusiness in Brazil at International Business School – Americas, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The course offered me the opportunity to gain an increased global perspective of agriculture and interact with students from around the world. Specifically we covered topics on Agribusiness Strategy in Brazil, Supply Chain Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Brazilian Agriculture, as well as Marketing and Communication. This experience gave me a new appreciation for the scale and potential of agriculture around the world.

Airlie used the award to attend the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) Outlook 2015 conference in Canberra in March 2015. The theme of the Conference was “The business of agriculture: producing for profit.”

Congratulations to Shristee Rahman for receiving the 2015 MFRE Leadership Award. After graduating from the MFRE program in 2015, she joined the MFRE staff as an educational researcher.
