The UBC Faculty of Land and Food Systems will co-author the renowned Canada’s Food Price Report together with the report’s leader, Dr. Sylvain Charlebois from Dalhousie University, who will actively contribute to the UBC Master of Food and Resource Economics program as an LFS Affiliate Professor.

 

We are pleased to announce that the UBC Faculty Land and Food Systems (LFS) has appointed Professor Dr. Sylvain Charlebois from Dalhousie University as an Affiliate Professor. Dr. Charlebois is the lead author of Canada’s Food Price Report, a nationally recognized publication that analyzes food trends and forecasts prices. In addition, Dr. Charlebois conducts research in the broad area of food distribution, security, and safety. As part of his Affiliate Professor role, Dr. Charlebois will become a regular contributor to the UBC Master of Food and Resource Economics (MFRE) by becoming a speaker at the MFRE Speakers Series, supervising MFRE student’s who will work on Canada’s Food Price Report as part of their Graduating Project, and delivering guest lectures in MFRE's core courses.

James Vercammen and Richard Barichello, Professors in Food and Resource Economics, and Matias Margulis, Assistant Professor in the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs at The University of British Columbia will contribute as co-authors of Canada’s Food Price Report as of 2021, along Dalhousie University, the University of Guelph and the University of Saskatchewan.

The UBC Faculty of Land and Food will contribute to this project through the expertise of some of its brightest minds, and the participation of it’s graduate students in the research process.  As stated by Professor Vercammen:

British Columbia’s unique determinants of regional and national food prices will now be emphasized in the report, broadening its scope and accuracy. Our Food and Resource Economics team will include faculty members with expertise in commodity markets and international trade, and students from the Masters of Food and Resource Economics program with expertise in econometric analysis.

About Dr. Sylvain Charlebois

Dr. Charlebois conducts research in the broad area of food distribution, security and safety. He has written four books and many peer-reviewed and scientific articles—over 500 during his career. His research has been featured in newspapers that include The Economist, New York Times, Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, Globe & Mail, National Post and Toronto Star.
