This summer, MFRE students are contributing to mitigate the current global pandemic by performing research on COVID-19 related topics for their Graduating Project.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year has been atypical and challenging for students around the world, including those at MFRE. However, two MFRE students are finding an opportunity in this troublesome time to do valuable research on how we can improve our response to COVID-19. Here’s a brief description of both projects.

Project 1: Research on COVID-19 Patient Flow Management and Optimization of Resource Utilization

This research is a case study aiming to illustrate how hospitals have reacted to the influx of COVID-19 by reducing waiting times and improving operational efficiencies to mitigate risk of exposure and nosocomial transmissions. It consists of developing a quality improvement framework to assess and improve the flow of patients, and determining Key Performance Indicatorsto measure and demonstrate the efficiencies of the hospital’s proposed system.

Project 2: The Economics of Mask Wearing During COVID-19: A Cross-cultural Study

The objective of the project is to help in understanding individuals’ preferences on wearing face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how it differs among different ethnic groups in Greater Vancouver.
