Positive Externalities is a podcast produced by the MFRE Student Club, today they bring you their latest episode: Are Crickets the Future of Food?

Dylan Jones is the founder of Coast Protein, a Vancouver-based manufacturer of insect based foods. Last month Dylan visited The University of British Columbia to speak to students from the Master of Food and Resource Economics (MFRE) about the rise of insects as food and the exciting potentials for the sustainable production of cricket protein bars and powders. In this eye-opening podcast, Dylan discusses with the MFRE Student Club the issues surrounding “unique and unusual food” and the future of cricket-farming in the context of climate change and the sustainable use of land & water resources.

Driven with a passion for nature and a keen interest in insect adoption, he founded Coast Protein three years ago. His company strives to create high quality, nutritious products with sustainably harvested cricket protein, and in the process, change up the food industry and the way we think about cricket consumption. This industry is certainly growing and although it may not be the sole source of protein in North America, he says that you may just find cricket products on your grocery shelves sooner than you think.
