"As a business intelligence analyst, one of my key job responsibilities is to create, design and deliver reports, dashboards, analytics and visualization solutions by using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and Oracle BI Enterprise Edition (OBIEE). Taking the MFRE program at UBC was one of the smartest choices I’ve ever made. I am amazed how my analytical thinking, communication and decision making skills have improved. Most importantly, I’ve appreciated having the unique chance to learn from and work with an exceptional set of faculty. Douglas Euper

Industry Accounts Division, Statistics Canada

"As an Analyst, I am responsible for specific industries and commodities that contribute to the calculation of GDP. Students are able to take away multiple skills from the MFRE program. However, the most important skills for me include the ability to work with and manage data as this is a highly sought-after skill by any employer. Expect a challenging but rewarding year at MFRE. Go into the program knowing that the more you put in, the more you will get out. For term projects, challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone and build upon the course material. Those projects will be extremely valuable for your own learning and future career opportunities.”

"As lecturer, I teach four courses including Agricultural Marketing, Agricultural Price Analysis, Economics of Food Consumption, and Project Feasibility. My research focuses on two topics: Food Economics and Labour in Agricultural sector. As I have always been interested to work in academia, the courses I took during the MFRE program helped me to develop a strong background to serve well as both researcher and lecturer. My research skills have significantly improved since taking the MFRE program and I received support from all professors in the program. If you would like to build up both academic or professional skills in food and resource economics, MFRE is what you're are looking for."

Isaac Jonas

"Under the guidance of Professor Rashid Sumaila, I conduct research on the development of sustainable Insurance Fund(SIF) for pelagic fisheries. Starting January 2018, I will develop my work as a doctoral student in the Institute of the Oceans and Fisheries at UBC. During MFRE, I developed solid research and report writing skills in addition to quantitative skills such as quantitative methods, excel spreadsheet modelling. I was in fact referred for my current job through a fellow MFRE colleague I met at an MFRE annual party. The program is also more than just an academic project as there are chances to interact with practitioners in the real world through guest lectures."

Alexis Carr

Retail Sales |
Soif Wine Merchants

"Participating in the MFRE program helped me to pursue my career aspirations of working in the wine industry, by providing me with the knowledge and skillsets that set me apart from other prospective candidates. One fundamental aspect that I believe sets the MFRE program apart from other graduate schools, is the encouragement given to students to apply the subject matter to their own passions and interests. I currently work for Soif, where I am directly involved in the sales, purchasing, inventory management, and marketing divisions of the business. The MFRE program’s commitment to providing an expansive curriculum, with courses spanning several disciplines, was what prepared me to adopt such a fluid role within Soif."
